Lake Powell is a man-made reservoir on the Colorado River, straddling the border between Utah and Arizona. It was created by the flooding of Glen Canyon by the controversial Glen Canyon Dam, which also led to the creation of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, a popular summer recreation destination.
North Lake Powell (Utah)
At 186 miles long, Lake Powell covers an impressive amount of territory across the American West. At the northeast end of Lake Powell is Bullfrog, Utah where you'll find the Defiance House Lodge at Bullfrog Marina and a vast expanse of wind- and river-carved sandstone. There's a saying in Bullfrog (Utah) that goes, "If you need something in Bullfrog, make sure you brought it to Bullfrog." That's to say, there's not much of a town - but the natural landscape makes the journey worth every moment.
South Lake Powell (Arizona)
At the southwest end of Lake Powell is the Lake Powell Resort and Wahweap Marina, which are just a few miles from the town of Page, Arizona. In Page, you'll find restaurants, shops and conveniences like the Super Walmart, as well as the John Wesley Powell Memorial Museum. At this end of the lake, you'll also find its most impressive man-made feature: the Glen Canyon Dam, which is open year-round for tours. It's also where many expedition and excursion companies have their home base for mountain biking, 4x4 tours, horseback riding and scenic air tours.
