(Lake Powell) Page, Ariz. - Dec. 1, 2008 - Lake
Powell Resorts & Marinas, managed by ARAMARK Parks and
Destinations, is proud to announce its recycling efforts over
fiscal year 2008 (October 2007 to September 2008) surpassed one 1
million pounds. A total of 1,049,345 pounds of recycle material was
collected from the four marinas - Wahweap, Bullfrog, Hite and Halls
Crossing - 300,000 pounds more than the average collected during
the previous three years.
"At the start of fiscal year 2008, we set a goal to collect 10
percent more recyclables compared to fiscal year 2007," explained
Cody Bailey, Interpretative Programs manager at Lake Powell Resorts
& Marinas. "To meet this goal, we would have to exceed the 2007
total of 783,000 pounds by 78,300 pounds. That's a daunting task
when you consider an aluminum can weighs in at .03 pounds, and
plastic bottles at around .065 pounds each. Employees and guests at
Lake
Powell rose to the occasion and we increased our overall poundage
by 34 percent."
Several initiatives contributed to a substantial increase in the
collection of recycle material. Sixty tri-bin recycle centers have
been installed for guest use since July 2008. Additionally, all
rental houseboats operated out of ARAMARK's marinas have can
crushers on board. Currently, approximately, 60 bags of aluminum
cans and plastic are collected daily between Bullfrog Marina and
Wahweap Marina to be taken to the ARAMARK processing center in
Page, Ariz.
Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas has also partnered with local
businesses and waste management services to process all cardboard
bins placed within the city. Lake Powell recycled 370,807 pounds of
cardboard in 2007 and 576,700 pounds in 2008, accounting for nearly
two-third of the overall increase in poundage in 2008.
"Other increases in poundage came from glass recycling,"
continued Bailey. "The glass gets separated by color, and sent to a
manufacturing plant in Utah, where countertops are made from
recycled glass, and sold back to us. We've found a great way to
close the recycling loop, and it reduces our cost of new
materials." Glass recycling at Lake Powell totaled 52,600 pounds in
2008, an increase of 24,600 pounds over 2007.
To put all these figures in perspective: Lake Powell recycled
11,213 pounds of aluminum cans in 2008, amounting to 373,766
aluminum cans. Lake Powell also recycled 11,360 pounds of plastic,
or the equivalent of 181,760 plastic bottles. "As an analogy,"
added Bailey, "If that many bottles were laid on the ground end to
end, they would stretch for nearly 23 miles!"
In 2008, Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas recycled 27,432
pounds of used oil, nearly 3,400 gallons that had to be hauled away
by a third party. Future plans and initiatives include having a
6,000 gallon holding tank that can be used in conjunction with
waste oil heaters to heat boat repair bays during winter, thus
reducing emissions and eliminating the need to purchase propane and
diesel fuel.
Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas takes pride in its
environmental stewardship role, and continues to be a leader in the
community and among its corporate brethren, serving as a true model
in recycling among the ARAMARK Parks and Destinations
community.
